“The question of what you own is actually the question of how you want to live your life.”

I love this quote from Marie Kondo! If you haven't heard the name before it's likely you've been a contestant on Survivor or been trekking up Mount Everest because you can't escape the konmari effect once you turn on your tv or scroll through social media! For such a tiny person, she is everywhere!

While watching her series on Netflix gives us lots of great tips on tidying and her process, which is very unique and eyebrow raising at first, it's reading her book that inspired me more. She talks about how she loved to tidy from a very young age (I can relate to this and those near and dear to me suffered though my annoyances at clutter and untidiness) and was fascinated by trying to solve the riddle of why people couldn't keep their spaces tidy and would always eventually return to clutter. After years of formulating various different theories and attempts to solve the issue with storage solutions Marie concluded that it is not just the way that we store our possessions that is the key to success but the relationship we have with our possessions. By examining our feelings about our things, one by one we can decide if we need it in our lives or if we should thank it for its purpose and let it go. This thought process is extremely powerful when you start to tidy. Marie's mantra is that our possessions should spark joy, hold each one and ask yourself does it sparks joy? If it doesn't then it is time to say farewell.

The process I follow with my clients is definitely inspired by the KonMari method. When I applied it to my own home I was shocked by the volume of things I discarded even though I thought I had no clutter to sort! I feel like I have a very different perspective on possessions now, I don't fear throwing things away incase I might need them again one day and I love that there is a designated place for everything in my home. Once you declutter it is much easier to organise the things you want to keep. No fancy storage systems required, just simple organisation techniques will transform your home.
